The Hobbit

December 18, 2008

This book is mainly about the metamorphosis of a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who is at first terrified of adventure (because of the mostly true stereotype injected to the members of his specie), but ends up traveling through an adventure, and loving the feeling of things unexpected, allowing his Tookish side to take control of him, (along the guidance and company of 13 dwarvs and an unusual wizard named Gandalf). This metamorphosis takes place during the adventure, which basically consists on the dwarves retrieving a treasure from an evil dragon named Smaug. Bilbo acts as a burglar.
I think Tolkien wants to communicate that there’s more to judging people by stereotypes, and that even if one agrees to what he is classified by, there is a chance that he might be exactly the opposite. I think he believes in the ability of people to try something new.
Yes, I do, because the idea is constant throughout, and the idea of the transformation of Bilbo is progressing throughout the book as well, so the way Tolkien projected this idea is very convincing.
For me what was really interesting from this book were the characters and how each specie had a particular characteristic, how he gave life to each one. For example, Gollum, whom he at first discribes as this hissy, strange creature, it gives you that air of creepiness without even seeing him.
I would deffinitely recommend this book even to people who aren’t really into mythology, because its beautifuly written and has just the right amount of detail and description.
I’d recommended to ages 12 and up, just because it’s kind of long.
